Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Gel, Juice, Cream, Tea, Powder and more.

ALOE VERA
Liliaceae

Aloe vera, a succulent with long, fleshy leaves, originates from Africa but is also cultivated all over the world. It is often seen as a pot plant in homes.

History
Aloe vera has been used for thousands and thousands of years. Some of its most famous users reputedly include Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. Commercially, it is added to many skin-care products.

Parts used
The aloe leaf contains two different liquids, both of which can be used medicinally. The first, aloe gel, is clear and is obtained by breaking the upper parts of the leaves and is used externally on the skin as a healing agent for cuts, scrapes, and burns. The second liquid found in aloe vera is a bitter yellow substance, known as "bitter aloes", which is extracted from the plant's rind. This liquid is very strong and acts as a laxative when taken internally. Aloe "bitters" should not be allowed to come into contact the skin, and when you are using aloe for its laxative effects, you should consult with a health care practitioner.

Active constituents
Polysaccharides; the gel contains anthraquinone glycosides, which is known as "Aloin," aloe-emodin, glyco-proteins, saponins, and resins.

How it works in the body
Aloe vera serves as a terrific wound healer, or vulnary, due to the constituent anthraquinone, and aloe vera gel's soothing quality is useful when used topically. Internally, aloe vera gel is used to heal the digestive system. Aloe gel is useful in the immune system. It's laxative effect is a result of the irritant yellow sap, which stimulates the colon and produces a movement in the bowel. Caution should be exercised however, since larger doses of aloe juice serve as a purgative, giving it more power, result in sharp pains. Recently, science has been reviewing the efficacy of aloe vera cream on radiation burns.

Application
The upper, fleshy part of the leaves is broken off and split apart to obtain the clear gel. Aloe gel or aloe cream can be applied directly to the skin twice a day.
